Type Locality and Naming

Generalized term for Permian formations of northwest India. In general, this Lower Gondwana set has major hiatuses above (most of Triassic through Jurassic is absent) and below (Ediacaran through Carboniferous is absent). The term "Upper Gondwana Gr" is not often used in the literature; but seems to refer to Jurasic-Cretaeeous formations in these basins, if present.


Lithology and Thickness

Non-marine to glacial-marine. Encompases Talchir Fm glacial, Barakar Fm coal, Barren Measures Fm clay sandstone, Raniganj Fm coal of Gondwana Basins and coeval Kuchma Fm glacial and sands and Paharpur Fm sands of Bangladesh. In West Bengal Basin, the Panchet Fm sandstone of early Triassic is also included. Extension of this term to Arunachal Pradesh is the succession of Miri Fm, Bichom Fm, Bhareli Fm, and Abor Volcanic Fm.
